WIND ENERGY
The U.S. Department of Energy has determined that West Virginia has significant wind development opportunities. Within the past three years, the development and operation of a 66mw wind site and the approval of two additional wind power developments have occurred. When constructed, these three sites would have a potential generation capabilities of more than 415 megawatts. Click here to see a map showing the locations of West Virginia's major wind producers.

Wind maps

The West Virginia Development Office has supported the development of statewide wind maps, which provide estimates on wind power and wind speed. Wind speed is measured at 30, 50, 70 and 100 meters from ground level. The wind power map characterizes the wind class regions in West Virginia. Typically areas above class five have adequate wind for commercial development.
