BUILDING PROFESSIONALS ENERGY TRAINING PROGRAM
Eligible activities: The West Virginia Division of Energy recognizes the need to provide information concerning current energy codes and building technologies. This program provides training and informational resources to builders, architects, engineers, code officials and private sector, government and school buildings facilities managers.

The WVDOE contracts with code-associated organizations and the U.S. Department of Energy to provide seminars on current building issues and regulations for building professionals. These seminars acquaint code officials, architects, building and government officials with current codes and new building practices and provide information on energy saving technologies. The training also provides architects, engineers and code officials with continuing education credits.

Eligible participants: Architects, builders, contractors, engineers, local government officials and county and school facilities managers

What are the current code provisions in West Virginia? The state of West Virginia adopted the 2003 International Residential Code and the 2003 International Energy Conservation Code with amendments during the 2006 legislative session. The codes were adopted on March 11, 2006; they became effective May 15, 2006.

The 2006 West Virginia Legislature also adopted rules that require the certification of home inspectors and standards for the certification and continuing education of building code officials, inspectors and plans examiners. These rules become effective Aug. 1, 2006.

When do you anticipate the codes being changed or updated? The most recent changes occurred in 2006. Any amendments or updates to these codes would have to be brought before the state Legislature that convenes each January.

Where do I find a copy of the current building codes? The rule that governs the West Virginia code is available online through a link available from the Secretary of State's Office at www.wvsos.com/csr/verify.asp?TitleSeries=87-04. What types of training do you offer and how often is it offered? The training varies, but in the past it has included topics such as "Overview of the 2000 International Building Codes," "High Performance Schools" and "EnergySTAR® Portfolio Manager," to name a few. Seminars such as these are usually provided annually.
