Purpose: The Clean Cities Program is a voluntary Department of Energy
activity to promote the introduction and use of alternate-fueled vehicles.
The clean-burning characteristics of alternate fuels enable them to
contribute to improving the nation's air quality. The economic development
potential of West Virginia's energy resources also has been an incentive
for the development of alternate fuels in West Virginia.
Description: The West Virginia Clean State Program is advancing alternate
fuel use through the use of educational and technical assistance.
When did West Virginia enter the program? The state received a statewide
Clean Cities designation from the U.S. Department of Energy on Oct. 19, 1994. It was re-designated in 1999 and again in 2005.
