| FLEX-E-GRANT PROGRAM - COMMUNITY |
 |
Some of the outcomes of community capacity building might include:
- Expanding citizen participation -- every community has visible and invisible groups of people who perform leadership roles, again striving to use all resources including financial, natural and human assets
- With a strategic community agenda, groups can see what is going on and what issues and challenges they are facing. Aim for a commitment of citizens to act, based on a shared awareness of issues
- By developing a strategic plan and going through the strategic planning process, a community can gain a better understanding of what they desire to be and set a vision, goals and priorities while developing milestones to determine progress.
- Using the combined influence of a community’s commitment, resources and skills that can be deployed to build on community strengths and address community problems and opportunities.
- An increased number of communities participating in programs that provide strong technical assistance and training opportunities that result in positive economic and community development activities.
- An increased number of completed community and economic development projects within participating communities.
Example of Community Capacity Project:
- Richwood Area Community Hospital -- Richwood Area Community Hospital CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) Educational Enhancement
- Eligible Activity: 3.1
- Purpose: To provide the best possible educational tools for enhancing an individual student's skill level while improving self-esteem, individual talent and self-worth. This project focused on participants from Nicholas and Webster counties enrolled in Certified Nursing Assistant training.
- Scholarship Student Example 1: This was a female, 42 years old. She was a homemaker with four children. Her husband works at a local lumber company. She was a former CNA but had not worked since the 1980s due to family obligations. During the interview process she stated, “I just need a chance. I was and can be a good worker.” She is now employed by the hospital.
- Scholarship Student Example 2: This was a male, 26 years of age. He is a father of three children. His wife works full-time as a CNA at the nearby nursing home. The couple’s goal is/was for him to get his CNA certification and obtain full-time employment so she could go back to school for her LPN. Subsequently, he was employed full time at the nursing home.
- Problem/Issue: It is difficult for a critical access hospital to match the educational resources of larger hospitals and it is also difficult for people to have access to local educational opportunities that may also lead to employment in their communities.
- Goals/Objectives: Provide students with scholarships and training to complete the Certified Nursing Assistant Training. The students, ranging in age from 19 to 46, were also provided with the equipment and materials needed to complete the course. All students remain in the community, and through additional activities, have been exposed to community leadership opportunities.
