NATURAL RESOURCES
West Virginia's wealth of natural resources attracts industry leaders from across the globe.

Coal, undoubtedly West Virginia's best-known natural resource, is mined in 26 of the state's 55 counties. West Virginia's coal is so diverse in grade and rank that nearly any needed specification can be matched here.

Natural gas is produced in 49 out of West Virginia's 55 counties, through approximately 40,500 wells throughout the state. West Virginia is the largest producer of oil and natural gas east of the Mississippi River. The state ranks 33rd in the nation for oil production and 11th for natural gas production.

Nearly 80 percent of West Virginia is in forest. The majority of West Virginia's trees are hardwoods with a few red spruce and pines.
